One of the most unique services I offer my clients, is my post hire consulting program.  I recognize that the transition from front line staff or department head to the CEO of a multi-million dollar subacute hospital, subject to constant federal and state scrutiny and oversight, can be daunting and extremely stressful.

 

For most new administrators, their first facility or first job, is going to be a facility where staff just walked out the door, very low census, the facility is losing money, and the facility is expecting the state to walk in at moment for annual survey.

 

Almost immediately, new administrators realize that they have no one they can turn to or trust to confide to them that they do not know waht to do or that the job is nothing like what they expected.  The dynamics you must deal with from day one will be overwhelming, and test you at every turn.  It will take at least 4-6 weeks for you to accurately assess your staff, and the individuals you report to, to fully appreciate the underlying strengths and weaknesses in your organization, and what you will and will not be able to achieve.

 

Most of my clients have little if any management experience, and few if any, have CEO on their resume before starting their internship. 

 

I know the challenges they face or currently are facing, and how mind-numbing their overall siituation can seem as they struggle to dig their way out of a mess they did not create, but must fix.  Hence the job title "turnaround specialist".

 

To help in this transition, I offer to be that one person they can call with whatever issues they are dealing with, or just to vent about their fears and frustrations.  In every situation, the message I try to ommunciate to them is that they are in fact very capable and are doing a great job, given the support and resources they have.  Because no one is going to tell them that.

 

This is a career with many many challenges, but also with many rewards.  It is at the point that you want to quit and just find something easier, that is when you need to push forward and to start thinking as a problem solver and not a just problem collector.  One thing is certain - your typical day will never be boring.
